Bat Zone’s Animal Fund
The residents at
Organization for Bat Conservation’s Bat Zone depend on your generous
contributions to supply them with enhanced enclosures, daily enrichment and
healthy meals. OBC receives some in-kind
donations from local grocers, but the majority of animal care items needed are
purchased. The Bat Zone animals are in
need of consistent dietary meals, feeding supplies and enrichment.
We have recently welcomed
many new animals to the Bat Zone as permanent residents. All of our residents are rescue animals that
are not able to survive in the wild. In
2010, a vampire bat colony, an endangered golden fruit bat, two big brown bats,
two bearded dragons and a barred owl all arrived at the Bat Zone and under our
care. Facing a surplus, our vampire and
big brown bats came from the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago. Angus, our endangered golden fruit bat, has
retired from the species recovery program at Philadelphia Zoo and spends his
days relaxing and eating sweet fruit with his new friends at the Bat Zone. After being confiscated from a drug house,
and then being placed into a foster home for a year, our bearded dragons Glader
and Saphira can now relax knowing that they have a permanent home here with us,
munching on crickets and berries under their heat lamps.
OBC also has two new rescue
barred owls, both found injured at a very young age and taken in by
rehabilitators in Alabama and Texas.
They are in need of updates to their outdoor enclosure. These updates will provide the owls with more
privacy and natural roosting options.
In 2011, an interesting inseparable
pair moved into OBC- a yellow-bellied slider turtle and a plecostomus
(“suckerfish”) in search of a new home. We
also recently rescued a domestic skunk from the local area that was not
receiving appropriate care and housing.
Sebastian, the striped skunk, is adjusting quickly to his new home with
a large area to roam and search for snacks.
We need your help to help enhance Sebastian’s enclosure and to provide
him with a variety of his favorite treats such as mealworms and almonds.
With your donations, we are
able to provide enhanced housing, a varied and healthy diet and comfortable
homes for the 170+ animals at the Bat Zone.
Aside from our newest additions, we also have over 100 bats, a tree
sloth, flying squirrels and more.
We thank you in advance for your
considerate contribution to the Bat Zone’s Animal Fund.
